North Boulder Fire 2002-2003: Wildfire History and Recovery in Boulder Colorado

North Boulder Fire - July 19, 2002

A significant fire occurred just west of the Foothills Trail Park Entrance in North Boulder. The blaze rapidly spread up the hillside and appeared to crest the mountain, extending into the Pine Brook Hill neighborhood.

Recovery Update - September 14, 2002

During a visit to the open space trail, signs of natural recovery were evident. Following substantial rainfall throughout the season, vegetation in the burned areas began showing new growth and a return to green coloration.

One-Year Anniversary - July 19, 2003

The North Boulder Fire reached its first anniversary under dramatically different conditions. The abundant rainfall during June 2003 had transformed the previously scorched hillsides into lush, rich green landscapes. However, July 2003 brought record-breaking high temperatures that once again turned the hills a crispy brown color.

There remains hope among local residents that those responsible for igniting the original fire will refrain from similar actions in the future.
