Shanahan Ridge Weather -- Boulder, CO
Overview
Shanahan Ridge Weather Overview
Shanahan Ridge is Boulder's highest-elevation residential neighborhood, perched at approximately 5,710 feet along the south Boulder foothills where the cityscape gives way to South Boulder Creek Open Space and the steep slopes of Bear Peak and South Boulder Peak. The elevation here is genuinely subalpine in character: frost is possible any month of the year on north-facing slopes, snowfall totals are 30–40 percent higher than downtown Boulder, and winter wind speeds are among the highest recorded in the city.
The ridge position above the Boulder Valley means morning temperature inversions are visible from here -- residents often watch low fog fill the valley below while they enjoy full sun. Summer afternoon thunderstorms develop along the ridge crests directly overhead, and lightning safety is a real concern for anyone on the adjacent open-space trails.
Despite the exposure, Shanahan Ridge rewards residents with some of the finest views in Boulder: the Flatirons to the north, the broad valley east toward Denver, and the high peaks of the Indian Peaks Wilderness visible to the west on clear days.
Fire Risk and History
Shanahan Ridge has a high wildfire risk, classified within Boulder's wildland-urban interface zone along the south foothills. The neighborhood borders South Boulder Creek Open Space directly, and the grass and shrubland fuels on the adjacent slopes are highly flammable during drought conditions. The Marshall Fire of December 2021 -- which burned approximately 6,026 acres in neighboring Louisville and Superior -- was driven by the same Front Range downslope wind pattern that affects Shanahan Ridge. The City of Boulder's Wildfire Mitigation Program provides specific defensible-space guidelines for residents here.
Elevation and Microclimate
| Elevation | 5710 ft |
| Zip Code | 80305 |
| County | Boulder County, CO |
| Wildfire Risk | High |
| FEMA Flood Zone | Zone X |
At 5,710 feet, Shanahan Ridge sits nearly 400 feet above downtown Boulder. The ridge position provides no shelter from prevailing winds, and the combination of elevation and wind chill produces effective temperatures significantly colder than lower neighborhoods during winter storms. Growing season is several weeks shorter than the Boulder valley floor.
Flood Zone Information
Shanahan Ridge is classified FEMA Flood Zone X with minimal flood risk. The elevated terrain and rapid slope drainage prevent floodplain hazard within the neighborhood. The South Boulder Creek corridor in the open space below the ridge is subject to periodic flooding and trail closures during major storm events, but these do not affect the residential areas above. The September 2013 floods produced significant creek flows below the ridge while Shanahan Ridge itself was unaffected. Verify specific parcel flood zone at FEMA's Flood Map Service Center.
