Mapleton Hill Weather -- Boulder, CO
Overview
Mapleton Hill Weather Overview
Mapleton Hill occupies a gentle northwest-facing hillside above downtown Boulder, with Victorian homes perched on tree-lined streets that rise toward Sunshine Canyon. At 5,350 feet, it sits slightly above the Pearl Street corridor, giving it marginally cooler temperatures in summer and a bit more wind exposure in winter.
The neighborhood's position at the base of Boulder Canyon and Sunshine Canyon means it experiences stronger downslope winds than lower-elevation central Boulder -- those Chinook events that buffet the foothills reach Mapleton Hill before dissipating over the flatlands. Snow accumulation here tends to be heavier than downtown: the hillside aspect increases snowfall totals in northwest-flow storms, and the shade from mature elms and maples along the street grid slows melting.
Spring wildflowers bloom early on the south-facing slopes, while the north-facing hillsides above Broadway hold snowpack well into April. The Sanitas Valley Trail is a five-minute walk, making morning trail runs a neighborhood staple regardless of season.
Fire Risk and History
Mapleton Hill carries a moderate wildfire risk, positioned at the edge of Boulder's wildland-urban interface where residential lots back up toward the open-space corridor leading to Sunshine Canyon. The 2010 Fourmile Canyon Fire started northwest of the neighborhood and produced heavy smoke; the neighborhood was not under evacuation but served as a staging area for fire response. Defensible space maintenance is recommended for properties on the upper (west) edges of the neighborhood bordering open space.
Elevation and Microclimate
| Elevation | 5350 ft |
| Zip Code | 80302 |
| County | Boulder County, CO |
| Wildfire Risk | Moderate |
| FEMA Flood Zone | Zone X |
The hillside orientation of Mapleton Hill creates a pronounced microclimate gradient: properties at the top of the hill (nearest the canyon mouth) experience 3–5°F cooler temperatures and stronger winds than those near Broadway at the base. Morning fog from Boulder Creek occasionally drifts into the lower edges of the neighborhood.
Flood Zone Information
Mapleton Hill is classified FEMA Flood Zone X (minimal risk). The neighborhood sits above the Boulder Creek floodplain, and the hillside terrain drains rapidly. Storm drainage moves quickly downslope toward Mapleton Avenue and away from the residential core. Properties on the lower north edge near Boulder Creek — particularly those within a block of the creek corridor — may fall within the 500-year floodplain. The 2013 regional floods had minimal impact on Mapleton Hill itself; verify your specific parcel at FEMA's Flood Map Service Center.
