Kalmia Neighborhood Weather -- Boulder, CO
Overview
Kalmia Neighborhood Weather Overview
The Kalmia neighborhood is a north Boulder residential area at approximately 5,340 feet, centered around the Kalmia Avenue corridor and close to the North Boulder Recreation Center. The neighborhood is named after the mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) common in Colorado's mountain foothills -- an apt connection for an area that experiences genuine foothills-adjacent weather patterns.
Kalmia sits in a transition zone: close enough to the foothills to receive heavier snowfall than east Boulder, but sheltered enough by the Iris Hollow and Wonderland Hills neighborhoods above to avoid the most intense Chinook wind events. The North Boulder Recreation Center and its associated parks make this a year-round outdoor activity hub, and residents have easy access to the Wonderland Lake trail system and the north Boulder Open Space via dedicated paths.
Summer afternoons bring the standard Front Range thunderstorm pattern, with buildups visible on the Flatirons providing useful advance warning. Fall is particularly fine in this neighborhood, with cottonwood and aspen colors visible on nearby hillsides and moderate temperatures making outdoor activity comfortable well into October.
Fire Risk and History
Kalmia has a moderate wildfire risk. While the neighborhood's interior areas are well within the urban fabric, the western edges approach North Boulder Open Space and the associated wildland-urban interface. Grassland and shrubland fuels in the open space above can carry fire during dry, windy conditions similar to those that drive Front Range wildland fires. Residents on the western edges should maintain 30-foot defensible space clearance and annually clear gutters and roof surfaces of accumulated debris. Elevation and Microclimate
| Elevation | 5340 ft |
| Zip Code | 80304 |
| County | Boulder County, CO |
| Wildfire Risk | Moderate |
| FEMA Flood Zone | Zone X |
Kalmia's north Boulder position provides a moderate, well-rounded microclimate. The neighborhood's relatively flat terrain and mix of open parks and residential landscaping produces moderate temperatures and good sun exposure year-round. Evening temperature drops are more gradual here than in higher-elevation foothills neighborhoods.
Flood Zone Information
Kalmia is classified FEMA Flood Zone X with minimal flood risk. The neighborhood's engineered stormwater drainage and relatively flat terrain manage runoff effectively with no significant floodplain hazard. The September 2013 regional flood event had no meaningful impact on the Kalmia residential area; major creek flows were confined to the Boulder Creek corridor south of the neighborhood. Property owners near any local drainage channel should verify their specific flood zone at FEMA's Flood Map Service Center.
