Gunbarrel Weather -- Boulder, CO
Overview
Gunbarrel Neighborhood Weather Overview
Gunbarrel is a northeast Boulder enclave at approximately 5,140 feet -- the lowest elevation of any Boulder neighborhood and the one most influenced by the eastern plains climate rather than the mountain foothills. Its location several miles east of the Flatirons creates a noticeably different weather profile: the intense Chinook wind events that batter west Boulder lose significant intensity by the time they reach Gunbarrel, and the orographic precipitation enhancement from the foothills is minimal here.
This means Gunbarrel typically receives 20–30 percent less snowfall than neighborhoods like Chautauqua or Shanahan Ridge in the same storm, and temperatures in summer are 3–5°F warmer than the foothills-adjacent neighborhoods. The trade-off is more exposure to north winds during cold fronts -- Gunbarrel sits unshielded on the open plains, and Arctic outbreaks from the north reach the neighborhood before finding any terrain shelter.
The neighborhood's parks and open-space corridors provide convenient access to cycling and running trails connecting toward Boulder Creek Path to the south and the Diagonal Highway corridor to the north.
Fire Risk and History
Gunbarrel has a low wildfire risk. The neighborhood is surrounded by urban development and open-space prairie lands managed by Boulder County Parks and Open Space, with no significant unmanaged wildland fuel adjacent to residential structures. The open prairie to the east and north does carry some grassland fire potential during extreme drought and high-wind conditions, similar to the fuels that drove the 2021 Marshall Fire south of Boulder. The neighborhood's interior and developed areas are well insulated from grassland fire spread by road corridors and managed buffers.
Elevation and Microclimate
| Elevation | 5140 ft |
| Zip Code | 80301 |
| County | Boulder County, CO |
| Wildfire Risk | Low |
| FEMA Flood Zone | Zone X |
Gunbarrel's plains position makes it warmer in summer and colder in winter wind events than west Boulder neighborhoods at higher elevations. The flat terrain provides no shelter from northerly frontal passages, and the open exposure makes this one of the foggier Boulder neighborhoods in autumn, when moist air from the plains produces low-lying fog that can persist until mid-morning.
Flood Zone Information
Gunbarrel is classified FEMA Flood Zone X for most parcels. The neighborhood's gentle plains terrain and engineered stormwater systems manage runoff effectively. Some properties near Boulder Creek tributaries or drainage channels that cross the northeast Boulder area may be within the 100-year floodplain; residents in those areas should verify their specific designation. The September 2013 Boulder floods primarily impacted creek corridors south and west of Gunbarrel; Gunbarrel itself experienced minimal direct flood impact. Verify at FEMA's Flood Map Service Center.
