Dakota Ridge Weather -- Boulder, CO
Overview
Dakota Ridge Neighborhood Weather Overview
Dakota Ridge is one of Boulder's westernmost and highest residential neighborhoods, sitting at approximately 5,560 feet along the foothills north of Chautauqua. The neighborhood backs directly up to Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, and its position on the flanks of the Front Range gives it weather characteristics closer to a mountain community than an urban neighborhood.
Winter snowfall is considerably heavier than east Boulder, and the snow lingers on north-facing slopes and in shaded driveways well after storms have cleared. Chinook wind events hit Dakota Ridge with particular intensity: the open-space terrain above accelerates downslope flow, and gusts above 70 mph have been observed during the strongest events.
Summer afternoons bring rapid thunderstorm development along the ridge crests above, with lightning a genuine concern for residents working outdoors. The views from Dakota Ridge -- spanning from the Flatirons north to Longs Peak -- are among the finest in the city, and proximity to the Gregory Canyon and Amphitheater trails makes this a prime neighborhood for hikers and trail runners.
Fire Risk and History
Dakota Ridge has a high wildfire risk as a wildland-urban interface neighborhood with open-space lands on multiple sides. The neighborhood is within designated high-risk zones in Boulder's Community Wildfire Protection Plan. During the 2010 Fourmile Canyon Fire, smoke and ash fell on Dakota Ridge and several homes in adjacent areas were under evacuation orders. Residents must maintain defensible space per Boulder's Wildfire Mitigation Program and register for Boulder County emergency alerts at boco911.com.
Elevation and Microclimate
| Elevation | 5560 ft |
| Zip Code | 80302 |
| County | Boulder County, CO |
| Wildfire Risk | High |
| FEMA Flood Zone | Zone X |
At 5,560 feet, Dakota Ridge has measurably shorter growing seasons and more frequent late-spring frosts than lower Boulder. The neighborhood's ridge exposure means it receives more wind energy than sheltered valley neighborhoods, and the combination of elevation and wind makes it feel 10–15°F colder than downtown Boulder on still winter mornings with the sun up.
Flood Zone Information
Dakota Ridge is classified FEMA Flood Zone X with minimal flood risk. The hillside terrain drains quickly into the canyon systems below via steep gradient drainage, and there are no significant floodplain hazards within the residential neighborhood. The 2013 regional flood event did not produce floodplain hazard at the Dakota Ridge elevation; however, the canyon drainages below the neighborhood experienced significant flow during that event.
