Bear Creek Neighborhood Weather Overview

The Bear Creek neighborhood sits in south Boulder at approximately 5,520 feet, wedged between the Shanahan Ridge open space to the west and the Martin Acres development to the northeast. The Bear Creek trail corridor -- a popular greenbelt linking South Boulder Creek to the open space above -- runs through the neighborhood, creating an attractive connection to the broader Boulder Open Space trail system.

Weather here reflects the neighborhood's transitional position between urban Boulder and the foothills: temperatures are cooler than the valley floor by 3–5°F, snowfall is heavier, and south and southwest winds during Chinook events can gust to 50 mph. The Bear Creek watershed drains a large portion of south Boulder's open space, and the creek can run fast after thunderstorms in late spring and summer -- residents near the greenbelt corridor should be aware of flash flood potential during intense rainfall.

Fall is exceptional in this neighborhood, with golden light on the nearby foothills and the open-space grasslands turning amber and rust through October.

Fire Risk and History

Bear Creek has a high wildfire risk due to its position adjacent to South Boulder Creek Open Space and Shanahan Ridge. The neighborhood's west and southwest edges border open grassland and shrubland that burn readily during drought and wind events. Boulder's Community Wildfire Protection Plan identifies this area as requiring active defensible-space maintenance. Residents should maintain 30-foot clearance of combustible vegetation from structures and participate in Boulder's Wildfire Mitigation Program. Boulder County emergency alerts are available at boco911.com.

Bear Creek's semi-sheltered valley position provides modest wind protection compared to Shanahan Ridge above, but the creek corridor itself channels cold air drainage at night, producing low temperatures several degrees colder than surrounding blocks. Morning frost in the creek-bottom areas extends well into May.

Flood Zone Information

Bear Creek neighborhood is classified FEMA Flood Zone X for most parcels. However, properties adjacent to the Bear Creek channel itself may be within the 100-year floodplain (Flood Zone AE). During the September 2013 Boulder floods, Bear Creek and its tributaries exceeded bank capacity in multiple locations, causing trail and property damage along the greenbelt corridor. Residents within one block of the creek should verify their specific parcel flood zone designation at FEMA's Flood Map Service Center.
