Baseline Neighborhood Weather Overview

The Baseline neighborhood takes its name from the 40th parallel -- the US Survey baseline that runs through Boulder along Baseline Road -- and sits at approximately 5,360 feet in central-south Boulder. The area is a dense mix of student housing, single-family homes, and small commercial uses between the CU campus to the north and Table Mesa to the south.

The Flatirons are visible to the west, providing the visual reference for afternoon storm buildups, and CU campus buildings to the north moderate north winds during cold fronts. Summer afternoons bring the standard Boulder thunderstorms, typically tracking east off the foothills by 3–5 PM; the campus buildings provide some shelter from hail when storms arrive from the northwest.

The Bear Creek path and South Boulder Creek Trail are accessible nearby, and the neighborhood's density means most outdoor destinations are reachable on foot or by bike year-round. CU's football games at Folsom Field draw large crowds that transform the neighborhood's weather experience: cold October games can be genuine cold-weather events.

Fire Risk and History

Baseline has a low wildfire risk. The neighborhood's central, densely developed location surrounds it with urban infrastructure and managed campus lands rather than wildland fuels. No fire threats have directly affected the neighborhood during recent Front Range fire events. During regional fire events such as the 2010 Fourmile Canyon Fire or the 2021 Marshall Fire, smoke settled into the area due to the valley geography, but structural fire risk from wildland fuels is low throughout this neighborhood.

The Baseline neighborhood's central location provides a balanced microclimate. The CU campus to the north and Table Mesa escarpment to the south create moderate wind shelter, keeping the neighborhood calmer than exposed areas during strong Chinook events. The urban density and large CU campus hard surfaces create a modest heat island effect in summer.

Flood Zone Information

Baseline is classified FEMA Flood Zone X for most parcels. The neighborhood sits well above the Boulder Creek floodplain, and no significant flood hazard has historically affected the Baseline area during major storm events. The September 2013 regional flood did not produce significant flooding within Baseline proper, though areas near the creek to the north were impacted.
