Arapahoe Ridge Weather Overview

Arapahoe Ridge is a southeast Boulder residential neighborhood at approximately 5,290 feet, positioned along the Arapahoe Avenue corridor east of 28th Street. The neighborhood sits on relatively flat terrain between the CU Research Park to the north and the Baseline Road commercial corridor to the south, giving it a well-developed suburban character with moderate weather exposure.

Arapahoe Avenue is a key east-west commuter corridor and is exposed to wind during Front Range events -- south and southwest winds funnel along the avenue's orientation, and the flat terrain provides no natural windbreak. Summer afternoons bring the standard Boulder thunderstorm pattern, though the foothills proximity effect is less intense here than in west Boulder; storms track east off the Flatirons and lose some energy before reaching this part of the city.

The Bobolink Trail and South Boulder Creek Trail are accessible nearby, connecting south toward the open space. Winter weather is moderate -- snowfall is typical of the Boulder plains level, and the Arapahoe Avenue road-clearing priority means commuter access is usually restored quickly after storms.

Fire Risk and History

Arapahoe Ridge has a low wildfire risk. The neighborhood is surrounded by urban development and commercial corridors on all sides, with no direct exposure to unmanaged wildland fuels or open-space fire risk. The CU Research Park and established development to the north and south buffer the neighborhood from any wildland-urban interface. During the 2021 Marshall Fire in Louisville and Superior — driven by grassland fuels south of Boulder — Arapahoe Ridge experienced smoke but no evacuation risk. Standard home fire safety precautions apply throughout the neighborhood.

Arapahoe Ridge's flat, open position makes it slightly more exposed to north wind frontal passages than terrain-sheltered neighborhoods. Summer temperatures run slightly warmer than foothills neighborhoods due to lower elevation and reduced orographic cooling. UV radiation at 5,290 feet is approximately 20 percent stronger than sea level.

Flood Zone Information

Arapahoe Ridge is classified FEMA Flood Zone X with minimal flood risk. The neighborhood's flat terrain and engineered stormwater infrastructure manage drainage effectively. The September 2013 regional flood event had minimal impact on the Arapahoe Ridge residential area, which sits above the South Boulder Creek active floodplain. Property owners near any low-lying drainage or swale feature should verify their specific parcel designation at FEMA's Flood Map Service Center.
